Summer Learning Journey

One of the most famous children’s stories to ever come out of New Zealand, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, was written by a kiwi woman named Lynley Dodd. The book was originally published in 1983. It is now sold in dozens of countries around the world. It features a small dog named Hairy.

On your blog, use the following sentence starter from the original book to finish the story.

To earn full points, your story should have, at least, 8-10 sentences.

“Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, He walked along the sidewalk barking at each car that went pass. Hairy Maclary wondered on further and saw something in the bush! It was Hairy Maclary's friend Hurcules Morse and he was as big as a horse. Hairy and Hurcules went to the park, they had races and played. When Hairy Maclary and Hurcules Morse were having a break, Along came Scarface Claw He was the toughest in tom town. Hairy Maclary and Hurcules sprinted out of the park through a broken board in the fence and back to the sidewalk. They didn't want to get into trouble with any cats today. They looked at eachother with very exhausted faces, then continued to walk back. When they were about to part ways Bottomely Potts was across the road barking at them, Nobody could not see Bottomely Potts he was covered in spots, he ran across to them as they continued walking. Hurcles spotted a bird in the bush he was in before and went back there. Hairy Maclary and Bottomely Potts made it back to the dairy as they both parted ways. It was getting late now to Hairy Maclary went to sleep at Donaldson's Dairy.

  1. Hi Bridget

Great to see you back and blogging again. I really enjoyed reading your Hairy Maclary story. It is a really great new adventure for them to go on.
I love that you have keep the original characters this just makes it like a new edition to the series.
It is quite funny how the dogs always seems to be afraid of the cats! Even if it is the toughest Tom in town!! I love that they sprinted out through a broken board. I can really see the image that would go with that page.

Do you like to draw? It would be quite fun to illustrate your story. I think that Lynley Dodd would really like this new adventure that you have Hairy Maclary and friends going on.
