Pendulum Art

Title: Pendulum Art               By: Bridget, Tara, Mary & Elsie

Aim/Hypothesis: We thought that it would look like how it looked on the video.
We also thought that it would be easy and we would get it first try.

Method: First we got 2 chairs and then we put a 1 meter ruler and tied it  to the 2 chairs after that we got some string and a paper cup and tied that to the 1 meter ruler so it would hang down in the middle. We put a hole in the bottom of the cup so the paint would come out then we mixed pink and blue in the cup with someone holding a piece of paper at the bottom of the cup so the paint wouldn't come out. We had some newspaper at the bottom of the the good paper that we were going to use. After that then we swung the cup on to the paper and it turned out like this.

Results:  On our first attempt the cup was a foot away from the ground.  It was quite messy and unorganized, the string was every and didn’t end up like the ones in the videos. Once we let go of the string to let it swing and do it’s thing, it just ended up doing blotches of polka dots.  It wasn’t flowing properly and it ended up looking like a mess. Our second attempt was a little bit better, but wasn’t what we wanted. It had the same problem as our last attempt, polka dot blotches and no improvement. For our third attempt we decided to change the pendulum by sticking a pencil through the cup and adding a bigger hole.  We secured the string to the ruler and it seemed to work wonders. We aced it at the third attempt.

Conclusion: Overall in the end it turned looking pretty cool. It took a couple of tries to get it right but we got it in the end and it worked.  Next time to make it successful we should do the same process as third attempt, but make the hole slightly smaller.

Work Interview Comment

Recently in class we have been interviewing people in the community about their work life. Today we interviewed Zak and Cameron's dad Jarred.

I think it was interesting how Jarred has done lots of volunteer work. I also thought it was interesting how he worked in the air force and how for work experience he blinked a fish eye puppet for a kids T.V show. I thought the story with the pot plant was funny as well. Jarred also mentioned that we should have technology, communication, leadship, and attiude skills for our working life.

Fair Trade Learning

At school recently we have been doing a lot of learning to do with Fair Trade. First off we started with learning what Fair Trade is. I learnt some new information about what happens in other countries. I can't believe kids my age are forced to work all day and get no education. We made fair trade poems in groups or on our own. I paired up with Tara for our poem, we did an accrostic poem. We looked at examples of Fair Trade poems and got some insparation off of them. We wrote down our poems on fair trade sacks using Indian Ink. When Karen was making the sacks flat, she found a few Fair Trade coffee beans! Along the way we also got to try some Fair Trade chocolate, looked at some Fair Trade packaging. Some people used stencils to write down their poem, others did it free hand. Also next time your at the supermarket try buy some Fair Trade items.
Here are some photos of Tara and I's poem.

Nutritionist Visit Reflection

Last week our class has had a nutritionist come and visit our class. Her name is Jessika Smaill and she talked to us about everyday foods, occasional foods, how to read labels, what vitamins different foods give us and lots more information. We had two lessons with her but I was only there for the first lesson. On Thursday we went to the supermarket with a pen and peice of paper and we had to find occasional cereals, muslie bars, dairy products, bread & snack foods. We also had to find everyday foods out of those catogories. After everyone was finished we went off to get items for our smoothies, my group had to get the dairy, one other group got the vegetables & the other group had to get the berries. At the end of the lesson we brought the items and had a final mini talk with Jessika and we all got free lunch boxes. Once we got back to school on Tuesday I made my smoothie, I put milk, mixed berry yogurt, mixed frozen berries, mango and pineapple. The smoothie tasted really nice and was healthy aswell. After the lesson I haven't bothered to change what I'm eating or eat healthier, but it is good to have that information in the back of my head.

Waiuta Information Report

A Ghost Town, Waiuta By: Bridget

Waiuta is a historic mining ghost town located in the South Island of New Zealand half an hour away from Reefton. Today Waiuta is a historic town full of recreational activities including  tramping, mountain biking, sightseeing and more. Waiuta has a history of mining, the towns population grew then decreased.

                         Waiuta’s Mining History

Waiuta was known for mining. Waiuta’s first mine, Blackwater Shaft was near the town and was 563m deep and went into full operation in 1908. There was a second mine called the Prohibition Shaft that was 879m deep and  became the main operating mine in 1936.The miners drilled gold bearing quartz out of an underground reef. The mine had timber props to stop the mine from caving in. In 1951 the Blackwater Shaft was being used for ventilation and pumping at the time, it collapsed resulting in gas and water not being able to be extracted.

Waiuta’s Population & Buildings

Waiuta had a population growth & loss and lots of buildings. There was the Empire Hotel near the entrance of the town that was used for lots of social gatherings. There was also a miners hall that was added in 1910, and was a large place for big gatherings. There was a school that slowly expanded over the years, by 1933 it had 113 students and 3 staff. The last major building was a cottage hospital completed in 1916. Waiuta thrived from 1906-1930, around 1930 it had around 600 people in the community. After the Blackwater Shaft collapsed the mine was shut down and the town was abandoned. After around a month there was only around 30 people left. In 1935 Inangahua had around 3600 people and 600 of them were at Waiuta.

Waiuta Overall

Overall Waiuta’s population grew and decreased thriving through 1906-1930. Waiuta had lots of buildings for many different reasons. Waiuta was very popular for mining but is now a ghost town with some buildings still in tack.

Weekly Reflection

This week was the first one back at school, I began my personal Inquiry on guitar and have been doing alright with my guitar the only struggles have been with some chords because I have short fingers. It has been quite easy to learn the guitar because I am really good at the ukulele so some of the chords are the same but with different names. I think my guitar personal inquiry is good and big enough because it is a brand new instrument for me.  We made timetables for our inquirys and I think mine is going slow steps but it is being affective towards me learning the guitar. Pet day was this week and I think it went really well I finished my poster (many other people didn't) and it was to a good standard. I got second place with Blanche my cat and the organisers did a good job. I've been doing my 20 minutes of khan everyday before the deadline, otherwise I think this has been an ok week.

Weekly Reflection

I prefer a structered classroom, but I don't mind Self-Directed-Learning. I learn the same way in SDL and being structered or having a certain time for a certain subject. I am always on top of the schedule and sometimes only have my personal inquiry to do (which is rock candy with Tess, and fundraising with Eden). I have completed everything and I'm almost finished my watercolour portfolio. I focus naturally and not really off task, when we do have the class basically all SDL I will be fine. I will keep focus by focusing on getting my personal inquiry and wanted to get it done. Anyway I am still the same with my learning and scheduel, I am still not the biggest fan of SDL but I am fine with it.

Moment In Time Rapunzel Sentence

Original: She scolded him fiercely for daring to enter and steal from her garden.

My Version:
The leaves crunched as he planted his foot on the green path. The figure of an old cracked grey wall raised in front of his innocent eyes. He felt the sharp crumbly rock on his finger as it bled a single tear of blood. Hauling his body over the slightly crumbling wall, he fell down and planted his feet on the ground. The Rapunzel shined like the sun, brighter than the other crops, wandering towards the Rapunzel plant with guilt. Grasping the shiny green plant and pulled it out with ease, dawdling towards the old gravely wall again but heavy breathing caught his attention. Spinning around as quick as lighting to the sight of a wrinkly wart infested witch. The witch turned her grin into a frown before scowling at him with anger. He started to quiver before dropping on his knees and pleading with fear. The witch slowly approached the man before boldly yelling at him. She sighed with annoyance before accepting his useless offer to take the child when it was born. The man slipped on the dirty mud patch before scattering scared, his heart almost bursting out of his chest. He climbed back over the dusty ancient wall before returning huffing and puffing.

My Version Of Hansel & Gretel

Twisted Hansel & Gretel

Once long ago in the 1800’s there lived a little family, they were the Huntersons.
The Huntersons family had the father, the stepmother, Hansel and Gretel.
Gretel was as skinny as a branch, luscious blond hair and sapphire blue eyes.
Hansel was very similar to Gretel except he was a bit more chubbier and had different interests.
When Hansel and Gretel were children there was very little food and not a lot of items to help them survive.
Their mother had died when they were very young and soon later their father remarried to their
wicked stepmother.
“I hate those kids, hmm how should I get rid of them. Oh, I know I’ll drop them in the woods by the evil
gingerbread lady mwahahaha!” Thought the stepmother to herself.
One day the kids were very hungry so they decided to take their mind off the pain they would go exploring,
little did they know that was their wicked stepmothers plan.

The moonlight lit up the fog, the only light guiding them through the thick, dense greenery.
The rustling in the bushes frightened them as shadows passed, making them trip filling their mouths with a
horrid taste of dirt. A howl in the distance startled the kids, putting them to a stop. There was a gush of wind
half knocking them over. The moss slipping in between their toes,  sending a shiver up their spines.
“Oi you useless kids hurry up I’m getting cold!” said the mother with a fierce voice, the kids quivered in fear
and didn’t respond. Hansel and Gretel quickened their pace panting.
After many hours of walking far into the bush Hansel and Gretel fell asleep and while they got some shut eye
their horrid stepmother wandered back to her house.

Hansel woke his body aching with pain, Gretel  soon awoke after.
They thought to themselves and knew there was no point in staying where they were.
So they wandered off trying to find their stepmother…
“WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” cheered the horrid
stepmother. “THIS IS THE BEST DECISION I’VE EVER MADE!” continued the stepmother
“Honey have you seen the children?” questioned Harold the father.
The stepmother turned down the music and replied “Oh dear I do not know” said the stepmother in a
sarcastic sorrow voice then turning it into a silent evil chuckle…
After many hours of wandering through the thick dense forest there was a sweet aroma that erupted
around the children filling their sense with a sugary appetizing smell. A glimpse of bright crystalized
colour exploded out through a gap in the dense forest. The explosion of vibrant colours were egging the
children on, their imaginations soaring as they took a step closer. One step, two steps, three steps closer then
they started to sprint as the figure of a house appeared, but this house was the house they imagined in their
dreams. As they started eating like a starving lion, chewing at the house getting a taste of past children's
saliva. Out of the door came heavy breathing and loud stomps, the figure was quite big and had a lot of rolls,
on her body and in her house. She wore an apron with pastel colours. She had ginger hair and a triple chin.
she pulled a machete out of her shirt and yelled “WHAT DO YOU LITTLE KIDS THINK YOUR DOING!”
Hansel and Gretel took a step back and whimpered like a dog, the fat lady made the ground shake as she
charged at Gretel. The gingerbread lady, took a swing at Gretel… slicing her right over the heart.
Blood was spilling out of Gretel’s body as she fell on the grass, her face was left on a scared shocked lifeless
emotion. Hansel knew he had to run but it was also too late for him, the gingerbread woman had already
sliced him in half. Hansel sorrowfully looked down at his spewing body with blood and turned like a stone
statue. The gingerbread woman squealed with joy as she received her new meat for her meat pie.
The gingerbread woman placed some more unbaked goods in the oven preparing her house for her next
victims. The gingerbread woman dragged the lifeless Hansel and Gretel into her house and made them
into a pie.

So the evil stepmother obtained what she wanted and the gingerbread woman managed to lure in a
lot more children who received the same fate as Hansel and Gretel.

Weekly Reflection

So far SDL to me is kind of get away with doing anything and your learning still manages to get complete. I always manage my time and I finish all of my tasks, I actually manage myself and my time wisely and get things done unlike others. I naturally focus and get everything done, I do mess around sometimes but I finish everything. I have completed everything but I just need to edit my writing, also with the writing we do desriptions for the characters, but I think we should only do the important things because these have taken up quite a bit of writing time for me, and I think less people would've not completed their writing this week. I think that this class will be the same aswell next week and I will still keep on task.

WK5 Weekly Reflection

I think that things are working ok in this classroom, they aren't making me go OMG I LOVE THIS its just in the middle. I am actually not the biggest fan of trello even though we have been using this for while I prefer to keep things in my head or look at the timetable. I have been on task and I've already finished my Hansel and Gretel Scratch. Next week I will do the same and hopefully finish my writing.

My Version Of Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood… With A Twist!

This is a story about a little girl, she was called Catherine. Catherine was only 7 years old, she had long
luxurious brown hair and sapphire blue eyes. She always wore her favourite red cloak  made with care
and love by her grandma. So the village knew Catherine as little red riding hood, everybody knew each
other there. The village Catherine lived in wasn’t really a village. There were 7 cabins scattered out in
the field and there was a total of 14 people in Birchville. One day while Catherine was skipping around
her backyard filled with the brightest of flowers and the buzziest of bees. Finally Catherine decided
that she better get down stairs and see her mother. Catherine’s mother was called Lisa, she told
Catherine in the nicest way possible that her grandma was ill. That upset Catherine very much so she
said “Is there any way I can help?” Her mother replied by telling her she was making a “Magical”
soup that will make her grandma feel better.  Catherine started to bounce around with joy saying
“I’ll do it, I’ll do it!” Her mother whispered
“Here is the magical soup ok, you need to make sure nothing happens to it” Catherine nodded her head
and skipped off to the woods, where she would soon deliver the soup to her grandma. The last thing
Catherine heard from her mother was “Watch out for the wolves, don’t trust them!” Catherine yelled
back “Yes mummy!” Then Catherine became little red riding hood for her journey.

Little red riding hood was singing as graceful as a dove. She skipped along and suddenly she stopped
with shock as she looked sorrowfully at the little wolf. He was whimpering hiding underneath a tree.
Little red riding hood slowly walked over and asked the wolf “Are you ok?” Little red riding hood
completely forgot her mothers safety orders, don't talk to wolves. The wolf looked down at the ground
sorrowfully and shook his head. The little girl asked “Is there anything I can do to help?”
The wolf looked up and replied in a sad voice. “Well you could help by telling me where you are going,”
the wolf’s frown slowly turned into an evil smirk. He knew that the little girl was gullible and that he
could trick her. The little girl replied by saying,
“I’m going to my grandmas house! She lives in the little birch shack”
“That's all I need to know” mumbled the wolf rubbing his hands together,
then running off into the woods going towards his lair. The wolf ran into the wolf lair and proudly
announced to the wolves that there was a new village they could take over.
The other wolves cheered with joy. Then they all huddled together and put together their evil plan, they
won’t need any food for the rest of the year. The other wolves spilt off towards the village while the leader
wolf went back towards little red riding hood.

Meanwhile in the village (Lisa’s point of view)

I was hanging out the washing, when suddenly I hear a loud group of footsteps approaching the village.
I dropped the washing and looked over the fence to see a horrible sight, it was the wolves!
I panicked looking around frantically, then my heart dropped as I heard my front door open.
Catherine couldn’t of been back already, I knew I had to hide so I jumped into the closest bush panting
with fear. I tried to keep as quiet as I could, I froze in fear as I hear the wolf calling my name.
The wolf looked at me for as long as a flash of lightning, then acted like he didn’t see me. I knew I
had to bail so I tried to jump over the fence but I was to slow. The wolf pounced on me and dug his claws
into me “What are you up to little lady?” said the wolf with an evil grin growing on his face.
“Nn-nothing” replied Lisa with a stutter,
“Well let's have some fun then” said the wolf digging his claws in even more.
The wolf lead Lisa into the house before Lisa tried to run with all her effort but failed.
“Well since you tried to run looks like it's only going to be  fun for me” said the wolf before grabbing
Lisa and biting into her neck. Lisa let out a blood curdling scream “Oh I better clean up the evidence,”
said the wolf with evil grin before eating Lisa with showing no mercy before running off to another house.
Many screams later the village had been abandoned by humans, and the only population was wolves.

Little red riding hood passed this beautiful flower field filled with the brightest colours.

Little red riding hood thought to herself they are so bright that would brighten grandma’s mood.
Little did little red riding hood know that the wolf was right behind her. Part one of the wolf’s plan was
done to distract the little girl, so he moved onto part two… The wolf crunched & cracked as he moved
along slowly gaining the house. The wolf practiced his girly voice along the way
“Grandma I’ve bought you some soup, no no to croaky”. Many hours later of talking like a girl the
wolf had finally  mastered the voice and made it to her grandma’s house.
“Hello Grandma I have bought you some soup mother made you!” said the wolf using his girly voice.
“Just open the door it’s unlocked” said grandma unexpected of what was to come next.
The wolf sneaked in holding back his laugh, the wolf wandered around until he found the bedroom.
The wolf peeked his head in when the grandma said “Oh Grim Reaper I was waiting for you to come”
the wolf shrugged and pounced onto the grandma before ripping her heart out, leaving blood everywhere
and all over his hand. The wolf threw the heart into his mouth “tasty, I’m going to save the rest for late”.
He ripped off a leg and chewed on that for a while before he realised he had to get into his disguise.

Thirty minutes later little red riding hood arrived and said
“Hello grandmother it is I little red riding hood and I have bought you some soup”
the wolf pulled the bonet down over his face and said “The door is unlocked come in”
Little red riding hood skipped joyfully down the hallway heading towards her ‘grandmother’.
She walked into her room and studied her ‘grandmother’ carefully and noticed something fishy about her.
Little red riding hood realised it was the wolf and strategically said “I’m just going to heat up the soup”
even though she was doing something much more sinister. Little red riding hood put the soup down and
picked up a knife, she snuck back into her ‘grandmother's’ room. Little red riding hood asked
“Do you want to try the soup?” she was trying to hide the knife behind her back “Of course dear”
the wolf replied thinking that he was the real evil one. Little red riding hood walked up to the wolf and
plunged the knife into his heart, blood started pouring out of the wolf’s now lifeless body. Little red riding
hood looked in disgust at the once white bed turn red. Little red riding hood left the knife in the wolf and
slowly backed away leaving the wolf’s body in the bed. Little red riding hood noticed the wolf cave was
empty and a horrible true thought came into her head. That was that the  whole village was dead and
taken over by wolves, so she started a new life in the woods surrounded by nature and the things she loved.

Weekly Reflection

This week has been a little different with out Mrs Gibson, but it felt normal. I know there will be more changes and personally I do not like changes if I don't like the change. I think this school will be kind of different but I will stay the same. I will try and adapt to the changes the best I can and I will still be on task with everything going on around me. I have made lots of progress on my tasks and I will keep up being on task.

Quick Write 14/8/18

“The cats out of the bag  now!”whispered Lucinda. Lucinda and Katie had been working their butts off all summer over this project. Katie would come over to Lucinda’s house everyday in the sweltering sun. They worked on it in the garage with the door shut and everytime one of them left the room they would put the sheet over it. They would work on  it for many hours of the day only stopping for lunch and when Katie had to go home. The holidays were almost finished and so were they.
One Week Later
“Do you think they will like it?” questioned Katie “Only time will tell” said Lucinda nervously. “This years winners of the science show are… Lucinda & Katie with their teleporting machine!” Announced the announcer. “Yaaaaaay!” Katie and Lucinda cheered in unison.

Also remember this is only a 5 minute quick create we were also given the sentence starter for the first sentence.
