Pendulum Art

Title: Pendulum Art               By: Bridget, Tara, Mary & Elsie

Aim/Hypothesis: We thought that it would look like how it looked on the video.
We also thought that it would be easy and we would get it first try.

Method: First we got 2 chairs and then we put a 1 meter ruler and tied it  to the 2 chairs after that we got some string and a paper cup and tied that to the 1 meter ruler so it would hang down in the middle. We put a hole in the bottom of the cup so the paint would come out then we mixed pink and blue in the cup with someone holding a piece of paper at the bottom of the cup so the paint wouldn't come out. We had some newspaper at the bottom of the the good paper that we were going to use. After that then we swung the cup on to the paper and it turned out like this.

Results:  On our first attempt the cup was a foot away from the ground.  It was quite messy and unorganized, the string was every and didn’t end up like the ones in the videos. Once we let go of the string to let it swing and do it’s thing, it just ended up doing blotches of polka dots.  It wasn’t flowing properly and it ended up looking like a mess. Our second attempt was a little bit better, but wasn’t what we wanted. It had the same problem as our last attempt, polka dot blotches and no improvement. For our third attempt we decided to change the pendulum by sticking a pencil through the cup and adding a bigger hole.  We secured the string to the ruler and it seemed to work wonders. We aced it at the third attempt.

Conclusion: Overall in the end it turned looking pretty cool. It took a couple of tries to get it right but we got it in the end and it worked.  Next time to make it successful we should do the same process as third attempt, but make the hole slightly smaller.

Science, balloon in jar With Mr Cook!

Today in class we had Mr Cook teaching us,(he is a sciencey teacher) The experiment we did today was the balloon in the jar, to find out more information on how this works watch the video. Also I was in a group with Eden & Zak, Zak was explaining how this worked while Eden & I did the balloon part.

Science roadshow reflection

Today Ruma J went to Greymouth Highschool to see the science road show. We learnt lots of things and we got to explore cool station, look at interesting experiments and there was a mini competition which was to see who could explain something and two people would get their names pulled out and Hamish and some random guy one and they won ultra violet 3D printed fish which in the sun it would turn violet/purple and when it was not fully in the sun it was white. We looked at heaps of sciency things and got to see what a little drop of pond water looked like through one of them microscopes and there were little bits of bacteria swimming round and that was only one drop. We learnt about a physical change and a chemical change we saw the lady do a demenstartion with paper a physical change was she ripped it and it was still the same thing and size and the chemical change was when she burnt it with fire the paper dissolved and so it was a chemical change because there was none of the paper left but she put the fire out with sand. There was a cool experiment when the lady had a tube of something then she got a volentere to put some powder in and it like did a bubbly explosion and it was called elephant toothpaste.I think the experience was good and all but next time I think there was not enough time to see everything.

Balloon Sound Experiment

Despite you only tapping lightly on the balloon your ears can hear the noise loudly. When you blew up the balloon you forced the air molecules inside the balloon closer to each other. Because the air molecules inside the balloon are closer together, they become a better conductor of sound waves than the ordinary air around you Link To Website: CLICK

Flora and Fauna Reflection with Mr Barnett and Henk form DOC Velenski track

R.I.P Reflection

Remember and describe what you did - Today Ruma J went on a walk for the flora and fauna with Mr Barnett and Henk,Henk is a worker at DOC and is an expert on plants.

Identify the important part -The important part is remembering what the names of the tree's are so if your family wants to know you can tell them.

Plan how you will use this in the future -I think that in the future if I wanted to get a job at DOC I could remember this experience and show them.

Experimenting with sound

For reading and topic we are investigating sound.Tess and I did an experiment on what different tones glasses make when they are filled with different amounts of water. Watch the video to find out more!
