Activity: In the 1950s, most people communicated with one another by writing letters. According to the NZ history website, New Zealanders sent over 200 million letters and postcards between 1950 and 1960. That is an average of 87 letters per person!
For this activity, imagine that you are living in New Zealand in the 1950s. Use Google Draw* to design the front of a postcard that you could send to a friend. Try to include elements of Kiwiana in your design (e.g. Pohutukawa trees, Hokey Pokey ice cream, etc). Post a copy of your postcard picture to your blog. Be sure to describe what you have drawn on your blog beneath the picture.
The features my postcard has is that New Zealand is in the colours of our flag. I have fish and chips on the beach with tomato sauce. There is a pavlova and L&P on the beach mat. There is a seagul, they are always on the beach waiting to steal your fish and chips. Then there is someone kayaking in the sea, inbetween the flags with a life guard on watch.
Kia ora Bridget,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Emiely (pronounced "Emily") and I am part of the Summer Learning Journey team who will be blogging with you this summer.
Your postcard looks fantastic! I can tell you have really worked hard to think about different Kiwiana elements to create this postcard. Those cheeky seagulls always try to steal my fish and chips too!!!
I love going to the beach too. A beach that my friends and Ioften go to is Piha beach. We always make sure we swin in between the flags! Why do you think it is so important to swim between the flags?
Keep up the great blogging, Bridget!
Noho ora mai,
Emiely :)
Tena koe Bridget,
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative postcard that you have designed. I absolutely love how you have set the scene of a typical summer's day at the beach here in New Zealand. Is this what you do in summer with your family? What beach do you like going to the most?
My Granny lives in Scotland and would love to receive this postcard as it would allow her to remember the beautiful summer days that we spend at the beach when she visits. Do you have someone in particular that would love to receive this postcard?
Keep up the awesome, creative work Bridget.
Have an incredible day,
Megan :)
Hi Bridget!
ReplyDeleteI love your postcard and how creative you made it to fit with the context of the activity but also made it your own. It looks like you've spent a lot of time and effort into it and it looks truly amazing!
